Ruth Calloway

Midlife dating editor at MidlifeInsider.

What this name is

Ruth Calloway is the name the work on this site is published under. It is a working name rather than the legal name of one person, and it is used by the people who research and write here.

This is stated at the top of the page because the alternative would be to invent a biography, which would make everything else on the site worthless. There is no invented career history, no invented employer and no invented qualification attached to this name anywhere on this site, because inventing any of them would be a straightforward lie to the reader.

The topics covered here

The work covers what it is like to start dating again in midlife, and that means four connected subjects rather than one.

  • Dating after forty and fifty. What actually changes, which is more about the pool, the pace and the software than about the reader.
  • Dating after a divorce or a bereavement. The gap between an event being over and a person being ready, and what to do during it.
  • Dating as a parent. Time limits, custody schedules, and the introduction question, which has an answer that is far more definite than most advice on the subject admits.
  • Romance fraud. The patterns, the published figures, and what to do at each stage. This is the arm of the site that took the most work, because it is the one most sites in this category will not write.

Every one of those subjects is covered from the point of view of a reader who already knows how to conduct an adult relationship and does not need the basics explained. The writing on this site assumes competence, because the reader has been running a life for thirty years.

How the research works

Four steps, the same for every app, and nothing else is claimed. The app is installed and signup is gone through as a new user. The free tier is worked through until it stops being usable. The app’s own published help documentation is read. And all of that is checked against what the people using the app report publicly, with disagreements between the two stated on the page rather than resolved in the company’s favor.

There is no test result anywhere on this site, because no controlled test has been run, and there are no prices and no member numbers, because both go stale and a stale number is a false one. The method page sets this out in full, including what no amount of research can tell a reader.

What this page does not include

No photograph, no personal history, no anecdote about a divorce or a first date, and no claim of professional training in counseling, law or fraud investigation. None of those things exist behind this name, and a page that invented them would be trading on the reader’s trust to look more authoritative than the work is.

What is real is on the pages: 10 app pages, 8 guides and 6 fraud pages, each with the reasoning visible and a way to tell the site that it is wrong.
